The finance minister unveiled some of 2011s federal budget guide- lines, Monday, during a luncheon at the Oakville Conference and Banquet Centre, hosted by the Oakville Chamber of Commerce. Before an audience of more than 400 people, Flaherty stated that one of the main priorities of the 2011 budget will be to get Canadas books balanced once more. The federal government accumulated consider- able debt to get Canada through the economic down- turn, he said, but now that the economic recovery is taking hold that debt needs to be dealt with. We invested a lot of money and ran deficits to stimulate the economy and create jobs when we needed to, faced with an extraordinary situation, but running deficits cannot become a permanent solu- tion to a temporary problem, said Flaherty. Everyone in this room knows that running a suc- cessful operation means not spending more than you take in over the long term. I know that, too. We must get our books back into the black to secure our recovery. I am determined to see that happen. Thats because his family was sleeping soundly in their home, while the house next door was in flames. Thanks to those teenagers, our neighbours, we got out in time, said Chua. The Chua family had been living in the brand new Allison Crescent home for a week when the unfin- ished home next door caught on fire early Saturday morning. The master bedroom was on the side of the house overlooking the home on fire, so when Chua woke up he could see the flames next door. He, his wife and their daughter were able to get to safety. The unoccupied home was com- pletely destroyed. It may be months before an investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshals office determines the cause of the fire that also damaged the two adjacent homes.
