Maple Grove United Churchs annual Third World Craft Sale pro- vides the chance to shop with a differ- ence this holiday season to help people help themselves. Fair trade vendors will be selling handmade items pottery, jewellery, scarves, handbags, organic teas, recy- cled paper products, wall hangings, and Christmas decorations with all proceeds going toward developing countries. Weve been running this sale for at least 15 years as part of our out- reach program, said Sandra Kerr, a church member who has been involved with this sale for years. Kerr works closely with the International YWCA, the largest vendor at this sale, which helps co-operative organiza- tions from more than 124 developing countries. Kerr said proceeds from the sale of items from the International YWCA go to the aid and support for artisans and crafters from economically strick- en, underdeveloped countries as well as in Canada. Another fair trade organization selling wares will be CASA Relief, a Christian charitable organization that fosters sustainable development in rural Nicaragua. Faces of Fair Trade will also be at the sale. This is a group of socially- concerned people supporting low- income artisans around the world by purchasing and selling their crafts. A new vendor this year will be Caring Hands, which has trained more than 50 Ugandan women to make beads from recycled paper, which are then turned into necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. The sale is Sunday, Nov. 28, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Maple Grove United Church, 346 Maple Grove Dr. (south of Devon Road). In addition to fair trade items, homemade goodies will be sold by the youths of the church with all proceeds donated to Free the Children. The fundamental core of fair trade, as defined by the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), is a trading partnership that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trad- ing conditions, and securing the rights of marginalized producers and workers. Its Colbornes Christmas crafts and Victorian Tea The annual Christmas at Colborne Craft Sale and Victorian Tea at the Sir John Colborne Recreation Centre for Seniors will be held Sunday, Nov. 21. The event takes place from noon to 3 p.m. This year's sale will be packed full of special items for the holiday season from hand-knitted and sewn pieces, to seasonal crafts, hostess gifts, baked goods and more. Try your luck at the lucky toonie table or take part in the 50/50 draw or buy a raffle ticket for a chance to win prizes. A visit to the Tea Room will turn up lunch and entertainment with seasonal music. The Sir John Colborne Recreation Centre for Seniors is located at 1565 Old Lakeshore Rd. (at Third Line).
