Dave Gittings will succeed Chapin as Ward 3 Town councillor while Ward 2 Town Councillor Cathy Duddeck will fill Olivers seat. Pam Damoff will be Ward 2 Town councillor. Councillors Fred Oliver and Mary Chapin have been dedicated to serving this community for many years in many different roles, said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. It has been a privilege to work with them and council thanks them for their dedication and hard work on behalf of the residents of Oakville. Oliver is retiring after more than 70 years of service to the community, including nearly 25 years on council. Oliver was police chief for the Township of Trafalgar where he retained his position through the amalgamation of the Township and the Town of Oakville. After the Region of Halton was formed, he continued his duties as the deputy police chief until retiring in 1980 when he ran for council. He was elected as Regional and Town Councillor for the Town of Oakville in 1980 and served until 1994 when he moved to a country home in Havelock. Oliver returned to Oakville and his elected position in 2000 until his retirement this year. Burton said on Monday, Nov. 29, he and Police Chief Gary Crowell will host a recognition dinner for Oliver. Tickets cost $35 and are available through the Mayors Office. Chapin began her career serving Oakville at the Halton District School Board where she held her position for two terms (six years) prior to running for Town Council. Chapin has a long history of volun- teer work in the community including volunteering for the school council at Oakville Trafalgar High School, Oakville Chapter of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, United Way of Oakville, Museum Advisory Board and the Towns Cultural Advisory Committee. When she first moved here, we were neighbours and I saw her most often at the door soliciting for the Heart and Stroke Foundation, said Burton. Thats hard work. Burton presented each with a painting as councillors and residents gave them a standing ovation. Remembering a job well done DANIEL HO / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER THANK YOU: Outgoing councillors Fred Oliver and Mary Chapin were each presented with a gift in recognition of their service to the Town of Oakville .
