The Oakville Fire Departments Public Education Officer Michael Harrison said the son of the household was in the garage refueling and repair- ing a vehicle when the fire occurred around 10 p.m. The boys father tried to extinguish the fire, but received burns to his hands and face as he attempted to move a burning container. Fire crews, who arrived on the scene moments later, con- tained the fire to the garage, and extinguished it fairly quick- ly. The garage suffered exten- sive damage in the fire, as did a Volkswagen Jetta inside. No damage estimate has been provided. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Harrison is warning resi- dents to be careful when work- ing with flammable liquids. When you are working with flammable liquids or anywhere near flammable liquids especial- ly in a confined space like that please be careful there arent any flames around, he said. This includes cigarettes, blowtorches, soldering irons, electrical shorts. The father of the family remains at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital where he is receiving treatment for his burns.
