The Grade 7 and 8 students of St. Dominic Catholic Elementary School are hoping to spread the word so that their Veterans Memorial Project can get on the ground at the side of Bronte Road. The project was entered into an Aviva Community Fund contest by the schools teacher and history buff John MacPhail. The contest features three categories, up to $25,000, $25,000 to $100,000 and $100,000 to $500,000. Competing community initiatives are hoping to garner online votes to be in the top 90. Of those top 90 a jury will select a win- ner for each category. The Oakville schools project is hoping to get funding for the construction of a veterans war memorial alongside Bronte Road also known as Regional Road 25. The road is also designated as the Veterans Highway, however, according to MacPhail there are only a few small signs scat- tered along the road to signify the designation. The school is hoping to be able to create a permanent fixture or memorial alongside the road to commemorate Canadas fallen soldiers. The school has been involved with other initiatives to support Canadas soldiers. The schools Grade 7 students create posters that are sent to the families of Canadian soldiers who die in service. The voting portion of the contest ends on Oct. 15. To vote for the schools project, visit www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf5892. School looks for votes to build memorial
