Halton police have no informa- tion on the fate of a low-flying plane reportedly seen flying dangerously close to the ground in the area of Lakeshore Road and Maple Grove Road Friday evening. Police said at around 6:30 p.m. two separate witnesses reported see- ing a small white and/or orange air- plane flying just above the tree tops in the area. Witnesses also described hearing what sounded like engine backfiring noises coming from the airplane. Police said one of the witnesses believed the aircraft may have crashed in the area due to its trajec- tory, which concerned police as the area is densely populated and close to the Oakville downtown core. Police responded to the area and conducted an extensive search of the surrounding neighbourhoods. The Halton Regional Police Service Marine Unit was also sent to search the nearby water and shore- line of Lake Ontario. These searches revealed no crash site on land or in the water. Police are confident the plane did not crash in the lake. Navigation Canada and other aviation centres were contacted, however, none had received any distress signals or had any flight path information regard- ing such an airplane.
