The last time the two Oakville Hawks repre- sented Ontario at the national championships, they held a three-goal lead in the second peri- od of the final only to have British Columbia rally for an 8-7 victory to claim the peewee title. But their payback would have to wait. British Columbia beat Ontario 10-4 in their round robin game at the national bantam championships in Whitby. That would be the only blemish on Ontarios record, though. In its other seven games, Ontario outscored its opponents 100-11. A tight 5-4 win over Alberta in the semifinals would give the team what it was looking for a second chance against British Columbia. In front of a crowd of 2,000 fans, Ontario would jump out in front with a pair of quick goals and take a 3-1 lead into the second period. Going into the second with the lead, we knew (B.C.) didnt like that, Kew said. And the Ontario team would not let that lead slip away. Drawing on their previous experience, Ontario shut out B.C., which had averaged more than 14 goals per game, over the final two periods with Cuomo scoring to put the finishing touches on a 6-1 win. It helped a lot, said Cuomo of having played in a previous national final. The whole experience made me less nervous. It was awesome because most of the fans were from Ontario. We stepped it up in the final. Cuomo, a Heritage Glen graduate, said he got more power-play than in his previous nationals. He had six goals and 14 points in the tournament. Kew was just happy to be back at nationals. He wasnt as confident about making the Ontario squad, thinking his size might be a detriment. He proved it wasnt, scoring eight times in the tournament and adding a pair of assists. And the St. Dominics grad certainly liked the ending much better this time around. It was an awesome feeling, he said. Losing 8-7 two years ago was hard. Both players were sponsored by Oakville Minor Lacrosse, which help offset the cost of them participating in the tournament. Also earning a gold medal at the nationals was Oakvilles Kyle Maksimovich, who helped the Ontario peewee squad win the Canadian title. Like their bantam counterparts, Ontario also met B.C. in the final and shut down their opponents, winning the final game 11-1. Maksimovich had four goals and eight assists in nine games for Ontario. Ontario blanked B.C. 6-0 in the round robin. That would prove to be Ontarios toughest test. It scored at least 15 goals in its other seven victories, while posting four shutouts and not allowing more than one goal in any of its games.
