K a r e n s e r v e d i n t h e R o y a l Canadian Navy as an oceanographer at naval bases on the East Coast. She then se t t led in Toronto to work for O n t a r i o H y d r o i n p o s i t i o n s o f increas ing responsib i l i t ies unt i l she retired in 1993. She also served as a Nava l Reser v is t a t HMCS York and was an of f icer in charge of a Naval Cadet unit. As a result of that service s h e w a s a w a r d e d t h e C e n t e n n i a l Medal . A ta lented gol fer and cur ler, Karen was ver y ac t i ve in loca l and national golf and curling associations.
