Longtime King Township resident Kate Miles-Williams has come to know York Region as a supportive and compassionate community and hopes its residents can find it in their hearts to help save her nephew, Oakville resident David Smyth, who has been given a month to live if he doesnt find a marrow donor. Smyth, 20, was diag- nosed with Shwachman- Diamond Syndrome at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto when he was six months old. Its an autosomal recessive disorder with an incidence of one in 50,000 births, according to the hospitals website. It affects many organs in the body and symptoms vary from individual to indi- vidual. People with the syndrome are at risk for serious and sometimes fatal complica- tions such as severe infections, acute myel- ogenous leukemia and bone marrow failure. It is a killer, said Mike Smyth, Davids father. It can lead to leukemia, like its done with my son just now. Blood donor clinics have added a marrow swab to screen willing residents in Oakville for a match, but one has yet to be found, Miles-Williams said. Every day, he is facing different chal- lenges. His platelet count is down and this weekend, he had a fever of 40C. The doctors are just trying to main- tain his health right now, she added. Its so frustrating for him and his family so we are all trying to get the word out. The One Match Stem Cell Marrow Network database has 257,000 Canadians registered as stem cell donors (stem cells are found within bone marrow). It is linked to bone marrow donors worldwide, giving it accessibility to almost 15 million donors globally. But even with those num- bers, the chances of finding a match are slim. DONOR NEEDED: David Smyth, in his hospital bed at McMaster University Hospital in Hamilton, is seeking a stem cell transplant that could help save his life. First, a bone marrow match must be found. His aunt is pushing for swab tests to be added to upcoming blood donor clinics in Newmarket, as was done two weeks ago in Oakville. There are now 789 Canadians waiting for a donor. This is why Miles-Williams is hoping York residents will take the time to visit one- match.ca to request a swab kit to see if they could help save her nephews life. Basically, you request the kit saying its for David to speed up the process, she said. You swab, send it back, they test and if you match, they will call you for a blood test. The urgency comes because it takes about three weeks to process the first sample and another three to make sure it is a close enough match. If we can reach enough people, we are sure to find a match, she said. People dont realize all they would have to do is donate enough blood for a transfusion, not spend a couple days in the hospital. She is also pushing Canadian Blood Services to include swab tests in their upcoming Newmarket blood clinics at the Ray Twinney Complex and York HOW YOU CAN HELP To donate blood, call Canadian Blood Services, 1-888-2Donate to book an appointment.
