Smyth is in need of a bone marrow transplant and is hoping to find a match through a bone marrow donor clinic. David Smyth needs a life-saving bone marrow match By Nathan Howes OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF It's a long shot, but Mike and Kim Smyth are hoping an upcoming bone marrow clinic will save their son's life. His parents are crossing their fingers the Wednesday, July 28 clinic will lead to a bone marrow transplant for their 19-year-old son, David, who has lived under the shroud of Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome (SDS) for most of his life, and now has leukemia as a result of the condition. A match would be the perfect birthday gift for their son, who turns 20 on July 30. David was diagnosed with SDS at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto when he was six months old. According to the Hospital for Sick Children website, SDS is an autosomal recessive disorder with an incidence of one in 50,000 births. It affects many organs in the body and the symptoms may vary from individual to individual. People with SDS are at risk for serious and sometimes fatal, complications such as severe infections, acute myelogenous leukemia and bone marrow failure. "It is a killer. It can lead to leukemia like it's done with my son just now," said Mike. The clinic will be run by Canadian Blood Services at Holy Trinity Parish, Banquet Hall, 2110 Trafalgar Rd. from 1- 7 p.m. "The July 28 drive is still a needle in the haystack, but it gives my wife and me some hope that maybe someone here in Oakville will be a match... or (someone from) Halton, Burlington or Mississauga who comes out," he said. "The more time that goes by, the fewer choices my son has and the more likely he's going to die." When he was first diagnosed as a child doctors didn't know much about SDS.
