For most people, recognizing that their parents need help in their daily ac vi es can be extremely di cult as children are used to their parents being the caregivers. However, for most people there comes a me when the roles are reversed and their parents are the ones who need help. Q: A: I had porcelain veneers placed on some of my front teeth a couple years ago. Now I want to whiten my teeth. Is there anything I can do to whiten the porcelain veneers? Whether you use over the counter tooth whiteners or more powerful dentist whitening treatments, artificial materials like porcelain veneers, white fillings or crowns cannot change colour by dental bleaching treatment. This is why before any kind of cosmetic treatment in the front of the mouth, I always recommend a patient consider tooth whitening as a first step, as it cannot be done later. Porcelain veneers are very thin and often translucent so they may transmit some of the underlying colour of teeth. Starting off with lighter teeth makes whiter veneers easier. In a situation like this whitening teeth after veneers are in place might allow a small amount of colour change to be seen through the veneers, but the veneers themselves won't change colour. And this is unpredictable too. Many times veneers are used to cover discoloured teeth and are therefore more "opaque" to cover the underlying colour. Here a change in the body of the tooth couldn't be seen through the veneer. So whitening after veneers are in place can be risky as nearby natural untreated teeth will lighten and the veneered teeth will generally remain the same colour. This may result in a bigger cosmetic problem unless the veneered teeth are lighter than the nearby natural teeth. In this case whitening nearby natural teeth can make the teeth blend better. Dr. Steven Rosenblat Great things start with a smile! Q A My child is a little behind in Math but as he is only in Elementary School should I really worry about it? Math is the foundation for a lot of additional learning and reasoning. The further your child falls behind the harder it becomes to catch-up and keep-up. The key to lifelong, academic and economic success is the development of critical thinking skills and numerical fluency in math. Students should begin to develop a good grasp of numbers while they are young. Although memorizing multiplication tables and solving calculations are important, developing a solid sense of numbers is essential. Focusing on mathematics especially algebra - across all grades, will ensure that students develop the analytical thinking and reasoning skills needed for success in school and beyond. At Sylvan Learning Centre we have specially designed Math programs that will fill any knowledge gaps, reinforce your child's areas of competence and give them the confidence to learn more. Don't let the Summer be a vacation from learning. Call Sylvan and get your child `Grade Ready' for September. Housekeeping. Check to see if daily housekeeping is being kept up or whether chores are star ng to pile up. Are your parents able to do everything they were doing a year ago or are they falling behind? Check to see if dishes are piling up in the sink, or if stacks of mail are le unopened. Check the kitchen. Take a look around the kitchen to see if mom or dad is ea ng properly. Check for spoiled food in the fridge. Ask what they ate for dinner the night before. Ensure that they're ea ng and ea ng healthy! Medication. Ensure that medica on is being taken on me and regularly. Know their medica on schedules and call to see if they've taken what is required. If they seem to forget on a regular basis it might be me to find some help. Happy home. Try to make sure your mom or dad is genuinely happy. If they are constantly bored or not feeling engaged this can lead to a poor quality of life. Ask mom or dad what they have been up to. If they're consistently struggling to answer those types of ques ons it could be a sign they are not feeling engaged. If you have concerns that your loved one may be experiencing any of the above warning signs, call Nurse Next Door for a complimentary in home nursing assessment to iden fy individual needs. Issues can o en be improved or resolved, with only a few hours of weekly support from a caregiver, when iden fied early. Making Lives Better One Visit At A TimeTM Find a place to call home.
