M There was a public outcry at Town Hall this week calling on the councillors to prevent the construction of 23 condominium units south of Lakeshore Road West. The land is located just east of Birch Hill Lane, and is the site of a 1930s lakefront estate that the Town wants to designate under the Ontario Heritage Act. Currently, the land is zoned for residential, detached dwellings. The developer, 394 Lakeshore Oakville Holdings Inc., wants a zoning bylaw amendment in order to build 22 detached residential units. The 23rd unit on the lot would be the existing Lambert-Smye heritage house. There is no intention to remove the home. The proposal calls for a shared laneway with driveways onto both Lakeshore and Birch Hill. There was a large number of people in the council chambers at Monday's planning and development meeting with several delegates speaking about the worries they have about the increase in traffic to Birch Hill that the new homes might bring. Rob Munze said he and his family have lived on Birch Hill for 24 years. He spoke to council about tree protection. He said there are 820 trees on the property. "The proposal calls for the removal of 52 trees and an additional 212 trees to accommo- date construction," Munze said. "I don't know where the heck they're going to build without killing just about every tree on the property." The property is also home to trees on the endangered species list. Another delegate, Danny Salvatore, said properties in the neighbourhood would be severely affected by the development. "We chose to live in an area south of Lakeshore because we see character, it's R01 zoning, it's mature trees and it's historical," he said. "We don't want to lose that character and that uniqueness." Tim Sinclair, another delegate to the council, said he's fairly new to the area, but he chose to live and raise his children in the neighbourhood. "Developers make money, that's what developers do," he told council. "People live in communities. We all live in communities." Another area resident and former owner of the property in question, Russ Little, spoke about the beauty of the property itself, its grounds and the building. "It's more than just a building," he said. "It's the entire property. It's something that is absolutely irreplaceable and we can never get it back. Once it's gone its gone and I do not want myself, my neighbours or this council, for that matter, to have on our collective conscience." A staff report is scheduled to come before council July 5.
