Three-storey high school plan draws opposition By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF 15 · Friday, June 25, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com With a new public high school scheduled to open in the West Oak Trails neighbourhood in September 2012, not all area residents are happy with the location of the threestorey building. A group of residents, many of whom reside on Arbourview Drive, met with the Halton District School Board and the Town of Oakville in an informal meeting at Town Hall Monday to discuss their concerns. The school is currently before the town's Site Plan approval process and the proposed building meets the zoning bylaw regulations. The school is to be built on West Oak Trails Boulevard, at Arbourview. School board designs show the school will stand north to south lengthwise and will back onto the Fourteen Mile Swale (which feeds into 14 Mile Creek) to the east. Across the ravine are the residences on Arbourview. Elaine Bottomley, one of the residents at the meeting, said she and the other neighbours in attendance have a problem with the school backing onto the ravine. The school will be three storeys tall on that side. "The three storeys are intrusive," she said. One resident mentioned a concern with a shadow effect on the properties across the ravine from the school. The land on the school's side is higher than the land on the residential side. Another resident mentioned a concern with youngsters going into the ravine. "High school behaviour is such that they are going to go where they cannot be seen," said resident Jonathan Brougham. "With this school there will be more hiding spots." The school board's superintendent of facility services Gerry Cullen said the school has design features to draw kids to the west side of the school. The cafeteria, which will be on the west side, will have an indoor/outdoor feature. There is a baseball diamond across an existing parkway to the west. On school property, south of the school building, there will be a football field and to the south of that there are already two town-owned soccer fields. He said there is always activity going on at schools, through things such as nighttime gym rentals, which will provide further security See Plan page 16 ENJOY THE OUTDOORS AGAIN Purchase Now and Beat the HST Deadline!
