`Ridiculously good' job was worth the effort By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF 9 · Friday, June 25, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Carpet Cleaning Specialists Since 1952 After juggling end-of-theyear university work, a social life and a contest full of challenges to get a summer job, Oakville's Jaime Neefs says the end result made it all worth it. "It's 150 per cent worth it," she said. "With all the work I put into it and the time balancing between the contest and school, but it was absolutely worth it. This is the best summer job ever. It's ridiculously good." The 19-year-old McMaster University student started her summer job on June 1 after winning the Axe Canada's Ridiculously, Ridiculously Good Summer Gig competition this spring to get it. "When I found out it was so exciting," she said. She found out she won at the end of April, a month after the contest ended. "I actually started crying because I put a lot of effort and time into it and it was just great to know that it paid off and they liked it." Now, she and Nova Scotia's Al Halavrezos, 23, who won the contest for males, are consumer Jaime Neefs consultants for Axe Canada, living in downtown Toronto, for two months this summer. To win the contest Neefs, and her male counterpart Halavrezos, had to do a variety of challenges and garner online votes to be chosen as winners for the job. The contest was chronicled at www.axesummergig.ca. The two consultants are asked to live a young, single-life in Toronto by socializing and having fun and then writing in a blog about it, at the aforementioned website. They are living in downtown Toronto apartments and getting paid $10,000 for the two months of work. "We've been super busy, just blogging and going out. It's been super busy, but tons of fun," she said. Neefs said in two weeks of work she's been going to events, media parties and has gone to an Eagles concert. "We're right downtown. It's amazing," she said. "There are so many things going on around us all the time. It's getting a bit crazy because of the G20, but that will only be a weekend. We're right in the lockdown zone so we'll see how that's going to go." But aside from having fun, she and Halavrezos have work to do, as well. Neefs meets many people in the business that work with Axe such as lawyers, writers, the marketing team and others. "It's cool to see all that goes into this brand," she said. "It's more (work) than I expected. The marketing experience and the job experience that we're getting out of this is unlike anything I'd ever experience if I didn't have Axe." The two winners also have a bucket list of items they have to try to complete and each week they get a theme that they have to follow. "This week it's online dating," she said during an interview June 16. "We signed up online and tried to figure that out. I signed up yesterday, but not too many hits. I'm going to try to ramp it up today and see if I can get more hits." She added there are perks to living in downtown Toronto. She is within walking distance from the office she works from and can get anywhere she needs to by walking, taking a cab or by TTC. Neefs was up against four other female finalists, including Oakville's Maddi Rundle, in the challenge before she won. Neefs was born and raised in Oakville. She attended St. Dominic Elementary School and St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School. During past summers, she has worked for parks and recreation and at a local gym. She said after her Axe position ends, she plans to have a quiet August and then she will head back to school in September. To check out her blog, visit www.axesummergig.ca. Spot!
