Public ceremony for fallen Oakville soldier A public commemoration will be held to honour the life of Colonel Geoff Parker on Saturday, June 19. The ceremony is at 2 p.m. at the George's Square Memorial and Cenotaph located at Trafalgar Road and Palmer Street in Oakville. He was the highest-ranking Canadian Forces soldier to be killed in Afghanistan. A bronze commemorative plaque honouring Parker will be unveiled as part of the tribute until a permanent feature at the George's Square Memorial and Cenotaph can be designed and installed. "On behalf of everyone in Oakville, I offer my sincere condolences to Colonel Parker's family," Mayor Rob Burton said. "The town is proud to join the family in celebrating his life." A graduate of White Oaks Secondary School, Parker joined the 1188 Lorne Scots Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps when he was 13 years old. He began his military career in 1989 and spent time in Belleville, Petawawa and New Brunswick. He is survived by his wife and two children.
