Taking root Camp Kahuna fundraiser Saturday After 10 years, Scott Graham's Camp Kahuna has produced some impressive alumnae. Police officers, teachers, postsecondary students and even a fundraiser extraordinaire named Bilaal Rajan, who at just 13 has raised millions of dollars for children's causes. In fact, the fundraising wunderkind wrote in a book Graham authored about his 17 years of working with kids that: "Scott Graham ... pioneers leadership strategies for children, steering them through the pitfalls of life, encouraging them to live with passion and to inspire others." The summer camp experience has been so profound that many of the more than 1,500 campers from age six to 15 who have attended over the past decade, often return to become junior and senior leaders in later years. "The whole premise of this summer camp is to create and build young people's self esteem and teach leadership skills," said Graham who is the camp's founder and director. These leadership skills are enmeshed into daily traditional camp activities, which include swimming, campfires, fishing and hiking. Thrown into the mix are occasional visits from musical performers such as Alan Frew of Glass Tiger fame, The Kings and The Spoons. There's also instruction on life as a medieval knight, fencing, clowning, and drawing. Demonstrations range from a BMX bike stunt show to magicians and African drumming. Graham operates two summer camps: one in Acton July 11-16 and in Burlington, at Sidrabene Camp, 5100 Appleby Line, from Aug. 15-20. To ensure money is not a detriment toward enjoying camp life, Graham has created an Angel Fund. It helps families like the mother of three boys whose 52-year-old dad/husband has Alzheimers disease. "She's basically a single parent and camp (at $610 per week per child) is out of her reach," said Graham. The first fundraiser for this Angel Fund is Saturday, June 5, at Glen Abbey United Church, 1469 Nottinghill Gate in Oakville from 7 to 9 p.m. and the second is June 12, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Camp Sidrabene, 5100 Appleby Line in Burlington. The events will both be filled with musical performances, juggling, magic, face painting and carnival games. The cost is $20 for a family or $10 per person. Tickets are available at each of the venues.
