www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, June 2, 2010 · 26 Determined Eagles squad rallies for junior rugby title By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR BURLINGTON -- Seeking their first Halton rugby Division 1 championship in school history, Sawyer Herron and the Abbey Park Eagles weren't going to be denied. Led by three three first-half trys from Herron, Abbey Park overcame an early 19-5 deficit to defeat the Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils 34-19 in Friday's Halton junior boys' rugby Division 1 final at Sherwood Forest Park. "I had it in my head I was going to score and I was going to win," said Herron, the Eagles' 8-man. "This is my first year playing with this school and I want to win the Barbarian Cup (provincial championship)." Those hopes looked bleak in the early going as the Devils -- Halton junior champions in nine of the previous 10 seasons -- raced out to leads of 12-0 and 19-5. That's when Herron took over, plowing through would-be tacklers on the way to his three scores. His trys and a convert from Jamie Leveridge narrowed the OT lead to 1917 at halftime, and Leveridge booted a penalty kick early in the second half to give the Eagles a 20-19 advantage -- their first lead of the game. Hulking prop Djustice Sears-Duru added two more trys as the Eagles pulled away, scoring the final 29 points of the contest. Leveridge was good on both convert attempts. "It's just a fantastic feeling. It's nice to see them achieve this, knowing it's something we wanted to do all year and had our hearts set on," said Abbey Park coach Tyler Leggatt. "This group has an attitude that they're never going to give up. They have faith in themselves to win and they want to take it to whoever they're playing." Abbey Park moves on to the Barbarian Cup tournament, a 16-team competition that will be held Sunday and Monday at Fletcher's Fields in Markham. Appleby College, the independent school champion, will also compete in the junior tournament. Abbey Park won the midget boys' Barbarian Cup title last season. Loyola wins Division 2 crowns Loyola's senior and junior boys' teams both won Division 2 championships last week at Sherwood Forest Park.
