www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, May 27, 2010 · 26 Hawks' focus now on winning Haltons Continued from page 24 Getting some extra BP dent," he said. "For whatever reason, things just didn't work out." The Irish has been a thorn in the Hawks' proverbial side in recent years, including a 4-2 victory over Loyola in last season's Halton final. "Usually we get up for that kind of game," said Notre Dame captain Scott Wilcox. "They're kind of an Oakville rival of ours, so we usually seem to find them in one of the big games, so it was good to get another win against them." Notre Dame pitcher J.D. Marks struck out five batters over five innings before the game was called due to the 10-run mercy rule. Irish coach Craig Pettipiece attributed his team's upset victory to patience at the plate and aggressive pitching. "Our pitchers came in and changed speeds for the most part, We knew that Loyola had kind of rolled through their division and so we had one of our better pitchers going," said Pettipiece. "The main thing was, `let's just not give them any free passes, make sure you throw strikes' and then we got some good defensive help behind him. "With the bats, you never know what you're going to get. Loyola had only given up one run in their six games coming in so we knew we were up against some pretty good pitching there, but our guys just did a good job of waiting for a good pitch to hit and when we finally got the pitches we didn't miss them." Although Notre Dame got the better of the Hawks Tuesday, Pettipiece expects to see a much more determined Loyola squad if the two teams meet again in the Halton final. "We had their number today, but when the Halton playoffs roll around I have a feeling we will be seeing them again," he said. "New day, new game, and I expect it will be much tighter." And McNamara is optimistic that his team can force a rematch in the Halton final. "(Winning Haltons) was always one of our goals," he said. "Hopefully they can achieve the goal of at least getting to the finals and hopefully winning a championship. Before we get there, we have to win two games, so our goal right now is to win our next game, I guess." Following its rout of Loyola, Notre Dame pounded the Nelson Lords 10-1 to earn the right to represent Halton in the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (GHAC) championship game. The Irish was scheduled to face Hamilton's St. Jean de Brebeuf today (Thursday) in the GHAC final. -- With files from Jon Kuiperij Bruce Parent and his daughters, Breanna and Holly, used last weekend to get in some extra batting practice at Neyagawa Park. ERIC RIEHL / SPECIAL TO THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Devils were undefeated going into final Continued from page 24 Red Devils head coach Duncan Warrener couldn't hide his disappointment following the loss, considering his squad was undefeated coming into the game, having won all nine of its previous matches. The Devils' hopes of advancing to OFSAA died with Tuesday's loss. "We just didn't bring the intensity and they outplayed us today," Warrener said. Oakville Trafalgar had been missing some of its lineup due to multiple players serving suspensions for yel- low-card infractions and others recovering from injuries. However, the Red Devils' Jeremy DeSouza expressed that while he and his teammates had to make adjustments before the game, they were still prepared. "We've gotten used to those previous formations and a lot of guys were playing out of position," he said. "But they were the better team on the day." The GHAC finals will take place tomorrow (Friday) at Hamilton's Ivor Wynne Stadium, when Holy Trinity meets the HWCAA's top club.
