Nurse enters Ward 1 regional race An Oakville nurse is challenging incumbent Alan Johnston for the seat of Ward 1 Town and Regional Councillor. Linda Oliver, a nurse of 30 years and Bronte resident of 25 years, declared her candidacy for the council position on Tu e s d a y, stating she was entering the political arena because she wants to ensure that her grandchildren live in Linda Oliver a safe environment and have all the opportunities that she and her husband had while growing up. Oliver said her campaign will focus on four pillars including, support for youths and seniors, stable economic development, a safe and healthy environment and affordable housing. "There is pressure for Oakville to expand rapidly," said Oliver in a press release. "We need to make sure that we continue to only support sustainable growth while continuing to preserve the heritage and community feel that makes our town so unique." Oliver says her experience as a registered nurse for Oakville Trafalgar-Memorial Hospital (OTMH) and as a safety advocate gives her insight into the issues that Ward 1 residents feel are important and the empathy to make these concerns her priority. Oliver is also a certified member on the OTMH Joint Health and Safety Committee. "Every day my patients and coworkers trust me with their health and safety," she said. "I am asking that Ward 1 trust me with the health and safety of our community." Oliver said, if elected, she will look to bring about a return to `backyard politics' where the decisions are influenced collectively by citizens and neighbours and not by partisan politics or special interests.
