Cel NO PST NO GST Abbysinia CHAIN WIDE 5TH ANNIVERSARY Spots open for Relay for Life teams What would you do if you or someone you loved was diagnosed with cancer? According to research done by the Canadian Cancer Society, current incidence rates show 40 per cent of Canadian women and 45 per cent of men will develop cancer during their lifetime. Also, an estimated one out of four Canadians are expected to die from cancer. With such sobering statistics, it is no surprise that the Oakville Canadian Cancer Society will be holding its ninth annual Relay for Life fundraising event on June 4-5, between 7 p.m.- 7 a.m. at Appleby College. The fundraising target for Oakville is to raise $500,000, up from last year's achievement of $480,000 and to have 150 teams take part. To date there are 93 teams registered to participate in Oakville. More than 90 per cent of funds raised from Relay for Life contribute to a larger pool where research dollars come from. As a team captain, participant, survivor, caregiver, sponsor or volunteer, you are joining with more than 70,000 others across Ontario to celebrate, remember, and fight back against cancer. This year, more than 200 communities across the province are joining the fight, along with many others around the world. Canadians will raise $58 million this year including mroe than $19 million in Ontario. In addition to raising money, Relay also provides a heartening opportunity for families and friends to unite and celebrate cancer survivors, remember those who have died from this disease and to take personal involvement in fighting back. Cancer does not discriminate and can strike at any age. This was the case for Taylor Braden, who at the age of two years was diagnosed with ganglioneuroblastoma -- a rare tumor that occurs in less than five of every one million children that can be benign or malignant. Doctors discovered a malignant tumor in her belly, chest and back, thus beginning a series of treatments and operations. Fortunately, the malignant part of the cancer is gone and the remaining part of the tumor is significantly smaller, and benign. After surviving this terrible ordeal, at eight years old, doctors found another tumor on her kidney, which they removed. Despite living through these tribulations Braden, who is now in her early 20s maintains a positive outlook. "She never skipped a beat and continued to live her life as though nothing was different for her. Instead of feeling sorry for herself, as one might expect given the circumstances, she embraced an opportunity to give back," said her mother Vickie. Relay began with one event in Ottawa in 1999. Since then, more than $107 million has been raised in Ontario.
