Air Quality Task Force forming strategy to reduce air pollution With its deadline fast approaching, a member of the Southwest GTA Air Quality Task Force says the group is making progress on an action plan that, if successful, will reduce air pollution throughout the area. Cindy Toth, the Town of Oakville's environmental policy director and a member of the task force's Community Advisory Committee, announced Tuesday the committee has met once a month since January and discussed a wide range of options that could be put in place to reduce industrial, vehicular and residential emissions. "We have discussed airshed management options, potential actions for emissions reductions including some ideas for the short, medium and long term," said Toth, during a meeting of the Community Services Committee. "An action plan has been discussed identifying key air quality parameters of concern starting with PM (particulate matter) 2.5 and NOX (nitrogen oxide). We are also discussing the Ontario Power Authority's (OPA) proposed Industrial Energy Conservation Incentive program that is attached to this $30 million figure and that we've heard about in provincial announcements around the time of Sept. 30." The task force has also looked at Ministry of Transportation sound barriers, which could potentially improve the air quality of areas next to highways if they are installed. The Ministry of the Environment formed the task force Sept. 30, the same day Oakville was chosen by the OPA as the site for the TransCanada power plant. Task Force Chair David Balsillie assembled the Community Advisory Committee in the hope its unique perspectives and various expertise would be useful in putting together a plan complete with emissions reductions targets and timelines and strategies for reaching those targets. The members of this committee include a representative from Ford Canada, Toth, Citizens for Clean Air President and Oakville resident Doug MacKenzie, Director of the Whiteoaks Lorne Park Community Association and former Clarkson Airshed Study member Dr. Boyd Upper, former Co-chair of the Clarkson Airshed Study Advisory Committee Julie Desjardins, Mississauga Residents' Association Network Spokesperson Dorothy Tomiuk, Holcim (Canada) Inc. General Manager Dave Fletcher, Daimler Buses Environment, Health and Safety Specialist Irina Vassilieva, Petro-Canada Lubricants Plant General Manager Mark Hiseler, City of Mississauga Environmental Engineer Jeff Smylie, Peel Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Mowat and Peel Public Health Environmental Health Director Paul Callanan. The action plan for emissions reduction within the southwest GTA must be delivered to the minister of the environment by June 30. 13 · Friday, April 16, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com FREE VOLVO OIL CHANGE If you have never been to Volvo of Oakville For service NOW is the time!
