www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, April 9, 2010 · 14 Terry Fox movie kicks off 30th anniversary of annual campaign The Terry Fox Run is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and the Oakville Terry Fox Run Committee is planning a year-long celebration throughout the months leading up to the September Run. First on the agenda is a special screening of The Terry Fox Movie at Encore Cinemas, 171 Speers Rd., on Wednesday, May 19 at 7 p.m. "It is important that we remember the tremendous courage and vision shown by Terry 30 years ago" said Oakville Terry Fox Run Chair and Ward 1 Councillor Ralph Robinson, "and this movie is a great reminder." Terry ran a marathon a day when he headed out across Canada to raise funds for cancer research. No one had ever done anything like this before -- let alone on one leg. He was only 22 years old when he died, asking each of us to continue his efforts. Encore Cinemas has provided the venue for this special screening and CEO and Ward 5 Councillor Jeff Knoll is delighted to be partnering with the Terry Fox Run for the first time. "We are a family-oriented business and it just makes sense to partner with a familyfriendly event celebrating a Canadian hero." Admission to the movie is by donation. The 30th anniversary will see a big change for the Oakville Terry Fox Run as it moves to Coronation Park for the first time. The run will start at Coronation Park and participants will then make their way to Bronte and back on a scenic route. "This new venue will really enhance the Terry Fox Run and we are hoping it will encourage entire families to come out this year," stated Pam Damoff, one of the event organizers and a Ward 2 council hopeful. More details will be released over the coming months. To assist with the planning of the 30th anniversary run, the committee wants input from residents who are being asked to take a survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/W2X65XW. All responses received by April 30 will be entered into a draw for the chance to win a 30th anniversary t-shirt. The 30th annual Terry Fox Run will be Sunday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. at Coronation Park.
