www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, March 31, 2010 · 26 First-year swimmer earns OFSAA gold Wallace Kelly's debut was as a good as gold. Kelly recently won an Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) gold medal in his first season with the St. Thomas Aquinas swim team. After placing fifth in the multi-disability 50metre freestyle on the opening day of the OFSAA meet in Etobicoke, Kelly came through with a goldmedal performance in the 100m freestyle on the final day of competition. "He came to us more as a recreational swimmer," said Aquinas coach Brendan Boyle. "He was very heads-up in the water but as he learned racing skills -- becoming used to doing flip turns, getting his dives more streamlined and keeping his head down in the water -- he really improved." Kelly and Alex Evans battled it out in the 100m but it was Kelly who was first to reach the wall in a time of one minute, 28.33 seconds, a little more than a second ahead of Evans. Their nearest rival was another eight seconds behind. "He was beaming," Boyle said of Kelly's reaction following the victory. While Boyle said it was difficult to predict how Kelly would do at OFSAA because there were a limited number of competitors in the regional meets in which he competed, he knew Kelly had shown a lot of improvement and was capable of swimming fast. The 16-year-old had been involved in other sports at Aquinas and Boyle believed he would be an excellent addition to the Raiders' swim team. "Wallace had a good season in cross-country so I inquired, `Is swimming something he'd like to do?' and encouraged him to come out." -- Herb Garbutt LEAGUE CHAMPS: The Oakville midget BB Hornets, coached by Steve Casey, won the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League championship last weekend in Oshawa.
