www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, March 10, 2010 · 10 A look at water pumping stations Mr. Civil Liberties By Tim Foran OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Halton Region is hosting public information centres in Oakville and Burlington as part of an environmental assessment study looking at the overall health of 59 wastewater pumping stations in the older parts of both communities. "The stations in Burlington and Oakville have been identified as a key priority based on their age, their location in older residential areas, and their potential for being impacted by intensification through the Sustainable Halton planning process," explained David Andrews, director of wastewater services for Halton Region. The EA study will consider the aging and deterioration of the stations, which are part of the drainage areas of the Burlington Skyway, Oakville South West and Oakville South East wastewater treatment plants. The study will also look at existing and future capacity demands on the stations and operational efficiency. The capacity of some of the pumping stations to handle new residential development has been brought up at recent Ontario Municipal Board hearings, according to a Regional staff report. The public sessions take place from 6:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a presentation at 7 p.m. In Oakville, it will be held on Thursday, March 11 at the Halton Regional Centre, Auditorium, 1151 Bronte Rd. Alan Borovoy, general counsel emeritus of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, who has been dubbed Mr. Civil Liberties by Canadian author June Callwood, will speak to the Canadian Club of Halton Peel on Thursday, March 18. He will speak at the Oakville Conference Centre on Recurring Threats to Civil Liberties in Canada. As general counsel for the Canadian Civil Liberties Association for the past 41 years (1968-2009), he has been the very public face of the civil libertarian movement in Canada. The event begins with registration and cash bar at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. Cost is $30 for members, $40 for non-members and $15 for students.
