OT's hard-hitting Howarth selected to national U18 rugby team By Daniel Perry SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER 29 · Thursday, March 4, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Her coach's strategy to hit low and hit hard is drilled into Nisha Howarth's brain. Howarth loves the feeling that throwing a big hit during a rugby match gives her. She envisions a giant yellow hula hoop wrapped around her opponent's feet whenever she drives her shoulder into a girl's hip and uses her momentum to slam her into the dirt. "My favorite position is playing the eighth-man lock," said Howarth, a 17-year-old Oakville Trafalgar student. "I get to be positioned in the back of the scrum. The eighth man acts as the rudder in the scrum by keeping the scrum from wheeling. In any scrum, the eighth man controls the play and fights for possession of the ball." Howarth's passion for physical play has taken her many places in rugby. She's helped the Red Devils reach the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations provincial tournament the past two seasons, and she was part of the Team Ontario that won gold at last year's nationals. recalled. "I shoved it back in quickly when our catcher failed to secure the ball. I rushed in to get the ball back and I smashed my mouth off the back of another girl's head." Howarth could only do what any determined athlete would. "I reacted quickly and stuck my hand out to catch my two falling teeth," she said. "I was shocked and I rushed over to our team's bench. My coach temporarily glued the teeth back in and I was rushed to the hospital." It is determination like this that helped Howarth secure a spot on the Canadian U-18 team. She hopes to continue playing rugby for as long as possible and hopefully earn a spot on Canada's U20 team as soon as she is old enough. She is also currently applying to schools for next year with the ultimate hope of playing rugby for Queen's University. www. com NATIONAL TEAMER: Nisha Howarth (in red), pictured playing for Team Ontario at last year's national championships, has been selected to play for the Canadian under-18 women's rugby team. Now, Howarth has been selected to play for the Canadian under-18 team, which traveled to San Diego this week for an exhibition tournament. "My biggest contributions to the Canadian under-18 team will be my experience and my aggression," said Howarth. "I pride myself on always trying to be the first one to tackle the ball carriers on the other team. I get pretty crazy sometimes when I play. I really try to make an impact on every game I play in." Howarth, who started playing rugby in Grade 9, already sports some veteran battle wounds. She has two false front teeth due to a fierce collision with another player last year. "I had taken my mouth guard out to call a play during one of my school's exhibition games," she HURRY!
