Camp is another opportunity for your child to learn and to extend their education deeply and broadly. A number of studies have shown that over the summer, students can lose up to the equivalent of 2.6 months of what they've learned during the school year. By keeping childrens' brains active, alert and acquiring knowledge, camp offers the chance to stem summer learning loss. Camps provide a very effective teaching environment because the learning is active and enjoyable. There are no grades at camp and children are encouraged in a supportive environment to test and master new skills. Camps can also create specific learning opportunities that can link to the school curriculum and even spark future career interests engineering, acting, designing, forensic science. Students are motivated by the camaraderie of peer and staff interaction, interesting topics and challenging activities. At Holy Name of Mary College School in Mississauga, we offer a variety of camps that can fulfill a child's passion whether they are crazy for ultimate frisbee or love being on stage. Forensic science, creative writing, fashion design, and visual art camps offer training and target their experiences to those who are focused on a particular specialty. Sophie Nemeth says she sent both her 12year-old son, Nicholas, and her 13-year old daughter, Alexandra, to the robotics camp because she was looking for instructors who would be inspirational role models. "Getting them to think about designing and building robots and then running their robots in a competition made both of my children aware of how fun engineering can be" says Nemeth. "The camp instructors are professional engineers and my kids loved the opportunity to interact with experts in the field." If your child has a storytelling or writing gift that you wish to encourage, consider "Camp Scribe". A writing camp will expose your child to new frontiers of creative writing, provide a chance to meet with fellow writers and perhaps even meet and learn from published authors. Think of camps in terms of completing a child's education and a chance for them to spark their inner passion in exciting, new ways.
