Oakville Day of Action protest planned for Jan. 23 There's work to be done and he wants Parliament to do it. New Democratic Party member and political science PhD student James Ede is calling on Oakville residents to join what is being called a National Day of Action in Support of Democracy. The protests, which are expected to take place across Canada on Saturday, Jan. 23, are being held to condemn Prime Minister Stephen Harper's recent decision to suspend Parliament until March 3. "This is not the time for the government to be taking an extended break," said Ede. "There's the economy, climate change and a number of other issues that require the government's attention and should not be neglected with an extended break or the suspension of all Parliamentary business." Ede said the Oakville protest is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23, in front of the constituency office of Oakville Conservative MP Terence Young, located at 337 Kerr St. Beginning at 1 p.m., the protest will feature a number of speakers including Ede and Mervyn Russell, of the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights. "We're hoping to send a message to the government that we do not agree with the prorogation of Parliament or the grounds given for it," said Ede. "I personally would also like to send a message that I do care about torture (referring to the possible torture of detainees in Afghanistan). The prime minister was recently in an interview and said Canadians don't really care about this issue. I can't speak for all the people at the rally, but I consider this to be one of the main reasons this suspension of parliament is so distasteful. This is a serious issue." Harper has noted the suspension of parliament was necessary so he could `calibrate his agenda.' Young was not available to comment on the rally as he is in Taiwan as part of a parliamentary delegation tasked with building business and economic ties between the Asian nation and Canada. 5 · Wednesday, January 13, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Winter Bridge Lessons Mississauga-Oakville Bridge Centre And The American Contract Bridge League FOR BEGINNERS...8 weeks, $154.00 FOR "RUSTY" PLAYERS...8 weeks, $154.00 Monday evenings 7:30, beginning Jan. 18th Monday mornings 9:30, beginning Jan. 18th Wednesday afternoons 1:30, beginning Jan. 20th Wednesday evenings 7:30, beginning Jan. 20th BRIDGE GAMES FOR NEWER PLAYERS...
