Constituents told concerns will be raised in Ottawa Oakville's Self-Esteem Team 3 · Wednesday, January 13, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Continued from page 2 Natural Resources, was in listening mode for much of the town hall. With microphones not working, the rookie MP sat on the corner of a table and fielded a wide variety of questions, often taking notes. Other than the applause garnered for a few opinions criticizing the prorogation, the crowd -- a vast majority identifying themselves as residents of Halton region -- was generally silent and attentive to both questions and Raitt's responses. Some issues received multiple comments, including concerns raised over the Ontario government's commissioning of the TransCanada natural gas power plant in Oakville by the Ford plant, technically in the riding held by Raitt's Conservative caucus colleague Terence Young. While Raitt stressed that electricity generation is under the authority of the provincial, rather than federal, government, she said she is monitoring the issue to ensure proper processes are followed and plans to pass on any air quality concerns to federal Environment Minister Jim Prentice. The federal government can't simply stop the power plant from being built, she clarified. The minister also received numerous questions about one of the major items in her own portfolio -- the government's announcement Dec. 17 that it would seek proposals from private investors for the Candu nuclear reactor division of the crown agency, Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. (AECL). The division, which has produced, sold and continues to service Candu reactors worldwide, has 1,600 employees and is headquartered just across the border in Mississauga. Raitt received numerous concerns from local AECL employees that a private investor may simply decide to shut down the Candu reactor's heavywater technology. Other international nuclear plant companies that could be possible suitors to buy into the Candu division use light-water reactors. The nuclear industry has 30,000 "good jobs" in Canada and the government remains committed to preserving and expanding that industry, responded Raitt. The potential sale of the Candu division does not affect AECL's other arm, the research and technology division at the Chalk River laboratories where the isotope-producing NRU reactor is currently under repair, she added. Raitt told the Beaver AECL employees attended all three of her town halls Saturday. "The employees of AECL are very passionate about their company and their technology and take every opportunity to make sure we hear what they're saying, and also to educate the people around them, too, about the importance of AECL," she said. "A lot of the employees of AECL are residents of Halton as well, they live in the riding." 60 all remaining % off winter clothing 1131 Nottinghill Gate (Glen Abbey) 905-827-2271 Watch Us Fashions Chisholm Tutoring YOUR PASSPORT TO THE WORLD Let our designers and product selection take you to another place.
