"It's being used to hide from the public, to hide from the Opposition." The Opposition parties have complained the decision to prorogue Parliament is being used by Harper to hide from a government committee's questions on the alleged torture of Afghan detainees. Ending legislative business means government, though not private members' bills, die on the order paper and committees of the House of Commons and Senate are shut down. "The man (Harper) has become more of a dictator than Pierre Trudeau had ever done (sic)," said Paul Redvers, a Conservative voter in the last election. The Oakville resident said the government has broken campaign promises to cooperate more with other parties in Parliament and be more accountable to Canadians. Halton MP Lisa Raitt "Is your integrity so low you would rather stay on as a cabinet minister than confront Mr. Harper about proroguing government to avoid bad press?" Redvers asked Raitt. Raitt denied the implication and said she has no fear of expressing local feedback to her caucus. "I will go and say these (things) are what my constituents are saying," said Raitt, noting she had heard similar opinions at earlier town halls in Burlington and Milton Saturday. This is the second year Raitt has held the open topic sessions in communities in her riding. She also hosted less well-attended sessions last January during the previous prorogation period, prior to the government's 2009 budget and its two-year stimulus funding package dubbed the Economic Action Plan. "The Prime Minister made it very clear why we're proroguing and I agree with him," Raitt told the Beaver following Saturday's event. "We are at a very crucial time in the country. We've seen the Economic Action Plan, it's worked very well. But we also want to get the feedback from Canadians, but we also want to make sure that what comes next in the Throne Speech and what comes next in the budget works equally as well and is the right thing to do."
