Continued from page 1 Stacey said the woman received smoke inhalation and burns to her arms during the fire and was transported to Hamilton General Hospital. There were no injuries to the firefighters involved, however, several second-floor residents sought medical attention for various minor injuries including smoke inhalation. The building superintendent was also treated for smoke inhalation, but was released from medical care. During the fire, police and Oakville Fire personnel evacuated residents from the second floor of the apartment to temporary bus shelters, supplied by Oakville Transit. The Oakville Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire. The extent of the damage to the apartment unit is unknown at this time. In the wake of this incident, the Oakville Fire Department is asking residents to make the right choices if they encounter a fire. "We don't know whether she tried to fight the fire or what, but what you should do upon detection of a fire is close the doors behind you and get out," said Stacey. "One thing that didn't happen was the alarm was not sounded for the apartment, so until we got there, residents in the apartment had no idea what was going on." Stacey said a smoke detector was sounding within the woman's apartment and credits it with helping draw peo- ple's attention to what was happening inside. "Smoke detectors do save lives," he said. 209 L AKESHORE ROAD EAST Downtown Oakville (905)845-2031 www.barringtons.ca Monday-Friday 9-6 · Saturday 9-5 · Sunday 12-5 BOXING WEEK EVENT BOXING WEEK DISCOUNTS CONTINUE!
