www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, November 27, 2009 · 14 Critics want review of health care system Continued from page 1 has been a dramatic increase in out-of-country health care. We are very focused on bringing that number back down." Christine Elliott, Progressive Conservative health critic, said in an interview the Province "should be taking a look at our health care system from top to bottom to see what we can do to make sure that people are able to stay in Ontario for their treatments." Elliott, the MPP for Whitby-Oshawa, said out-of-country spending "is not doing anything to benefit our overall health care system here." She said that while "it's helping individuals, and that's good, to get the relief they need, it's far preferable to be able to have that health care delivered in this province." Elizabeth Witmer, former PC health critic and Kitchener-Waterloo MPP, also called for a review of the entire health system, saying: "This is urgent. This needs to happen right now." HST removes hidden tax Continued from page 6 The plan would also implement the HST, which economists say is the single most important thing we can do to save jobs and position our economy for future growth. This initiative is supported by a diverse number of credible experts from Don Drummond at the TD Bank to the Ontario Daily Bread Food Bank and many others who have declared support for these tax reforms. On almost any product we currently purchase the PST has already been charged multiple times and this simply raises the price of the final product. The HST removes this hidden tax and allows businesses, non-profit organizations and municipalities to receive a sales tax credit that they can use to lower consumer prices. A number of studies show that businesses pass on their savings from the HST to consumers 80 per cent in year one rising to 95 per cent by year three. To assist, we are providing payments to Ontarian citizens to help with the transition years. Some consumer prices will increase slightly and some will fall. Yet, the HST will not be applied to an estimated 80 per cent of personal spending. Groceries, rent, condo fees, and many more items will not be subject to the HST. Contrary to the scare tactics employed by the opposition the government will actually collect less revenue as a result of these changes Our government is not implementing the HST to raise taxes or collect more revenue. Our government is implementing the proposed tax reform package because we recognize the need to cut your taxes, attract investment and create the jobs of the future.
