OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, October 8, 2009 · 24 Santa set to rock stockings in Oakville G et the guitars and drums out for this year's Oakville Santa Claus Parade as we rock around Lakeshore Road and Kerr Street and Oakvillians young and old come out to catch a glimpse of the big, bearded man himself. The Oakville Santa Claus Parade Committee has been as busy as Santa's elves over the summer preparing for this year's parade, which takes place Saturday, Nov. 21, starting at 9 a.m. This year's theme is A Rock `n' Roll Christmas. The parade is now accepting applications for float entries and encourages all those from our community to show their creativity by participating in the upcoming event. Application forms can be printed at www.oakvillesantaclausparade.ca by clicking on Registration. The deadline for entries is Friday, Oct. 23 or the first 50 entries, whichever comes first. Once again, children can look forward to entering our annual colouring contest and possibly winning the chance to ride in the parade along with the Grand Marshal. Check the website for details on the colouring contest. Kids, be sure to visit us at Halloween Happenings in Kerr Village on Saturday, Oct. 24. Santa's elves will be there from noon-6 p.m. with face painting, games and you can take part in a scavenger hunt to win the chance to ride on Santa's float. Now in its 61st year, the Oakville Santa Claus Parade is a cherished tradition in our Town. The parade will begin at Lakeshore Road and Reynolds Street, go west on Lakeshore to Kerr Street, north on Kerr and end at Kerr and Stewart streets. Two teams, Oakville's L.O.S.T. Runners and Toronto Christian Runners, are preparing to go head to head on Thanksgiving Monday morning at Heritage Square. Race start is 9:45 a.m. Oakville's L.O.S.T. Runners, who last year ran under the banner of Kino Team 1 and won by 55 seconds (fastest five times accumulated), are determined to retain their title. Toronto Christian Runners are bringing in a heavy hitter this year, with Daniel Mburu Njenga, 2008 Toronto Marathon winner, as part of their team. "This will be a very exciting race," said Caroline Glasbey, race director. "We have runners and power walkers coming from all over Oakville, Burlington, the GTA and beyond. Ultimately, though, we just want everyone to have a lot of fun and enjoy themselves, while running off their turkey." Following the 5-km run and the 5-km power walk, there is a free family 1-km fun run/walk, with registration only on race morning. Come early for the face painting and other fun games for the kids. All proceeds, including registration fees and pledges, go to Kerr Street Ministries' (KSM) children's and youth programs. They hope to exceed last year's net proceeds of $30,000, but more importantly, this event is to raise awareness of KSM and the services it provides to members of the community who are in need. Check the race website at www.5ksmrunforhope.com for more details. Online registration ends tomorrow (Friday). Registration and kit pick-up is available at the YMCA, 410 Rebecca St., on Saturday, between 1-5 p.m., and then on race day at Heritage Square between 8:159:15 a.m. For more information about the event, contact Caroline Glasbey at 905-338-5294 or e-mail her at ksmrunforhope@sympatico.ca.
