Brenda Hajdu had been in week 37 of her pregnancy and was not expecting her baby to be born for another three weeks. Even so, she and her husband Peter thought they had prepared for every possible contingency. "We thought we were all organized," said Peter. "The plan was Brenda would let me know when we had to go down to the hospital, we would head down to Mount Sinai in Toronto. It's about a half hour away. The doctors and staff were all ready. They knew us." Brenda noted plans were even in place for getting her to the hospital if she was at her job when she went into labour, which she assumed would take several hours. "Peter had planned for us to watch a couple of movies and we were going to bring Scrabble, to help pass the time," said Brenda. Little did the Courage brothers know that when their mother, Gaye, told them to get off the couch and go jump in the lake -- it would lead them to Africa 25 years later. After years of dipping into icy Lake Ontario on New Year's Day -- and inspiring thousands of others to do the same -- Oakville's Courage brothers will finally witness what all their sweat (and shivering) has been about -- as they travel to Africa to visit the site of a clean water project the polar bear dips of Trent Courage 2009 and 2010 are funding. Todd, 46, and Trent Courage, 42, both of Oakville, co-owners of Courage Brothers Distributing Inc. in town and founders of the Courage Brothers Polar Bear Dip that takes place in Coronation Park every Jan. 1, are leaving this weekend on a 10-day trip to Todd Courage Rwanda. Besides their mom, Gaye, 69 -- the indirect founder of the whole thing, according to Todd -- the Courage brothers will travel with three World Vision representatives including a videographer, and Breakfast Television Live Eye host Jennifer Valentyne, who began covering the dip for City TV and is now a supporter of the dip and World Vision.
