23 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, September 18, 2009 Every Child Ready to Read KENNEDY FORD DEALER OAKVILLE'S ORIGINAL S eptember is often the time when our children's education is at the forefront of our minds. For the Oakville Public Library, fall is when we celebrate our children's programs and services, in particular, our Every Child Ready to Read (ECR2R) initiative. The ECR2R program is an awareness campaign introducing parents and caregivers -- those who play a vital role in a child's early learning -- to the many fun, easy ways to explore and experience pre-reading skills. Research tells us that children learn the skills they need to read years before they start school. Children who experience or explore pre-reading skills at a young age have far less difficulty learning to read when they do start school. This September, parents and caregivers are invited to attend two upcoming fun events with their children that will highlight ideas and ways parents and caregivers can support their children's reading experiences. On Saturday, Sept. 26, Oakville Public Library will take part in Oakville Fire Department's Fire Prevention Week kick-off event at its training campus. Festivities will begin at 11 a.m. and run to 4 p.m., and will be packed with tons of fun for families. The main Children's Entertainer will be Mary Lambert, who will perform at both 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. -- incorporating our Every Child Ready to Read Message into her infectious music and energetic routines. An outstanding Canadian artist in the children's entertainment field, Lambert will be sure to grab everyone's attention and show how singing songs and mak- 2004 MUSTANG GT COUPE SPEECIIALL GIIFFT SP C A G T PO3920, V8, 5 SPEED, MACH 1000, 17" POLISHED WHEELS BLACK 33,647KM EEVEERYOONEE V RY N REECCEEIIVEESSA R V A ing up rhymes are a great way to introduce and evolve early literacy skills. As part of Public Library Week 2009, Oakville Public Library is excited to hold its Every Child Ready to Read First Concert with Chris McKhool, hailed as one of Canada's hottest children's musicians. This free pre-schooler concert will be Monday, Oct. 19 at 10 a.m. in the Oakville Centre for Performing Arts and tickets are available from all OPL branches. Traditionally, the role of the Children's Services staff has been to create, encourage, and nurture a culture of reading in children. "Research tells us that when a child has a significant adult in their lives sharing books, reading aloud, talking about what they are hearing, seeing, and doing, that child will have much less difficulty as a developing and practicing reader," said Sharon Yates, Oakville Public Library's children's advocate. Making a little special time where you share a book can have a huge impact on your child's attitude towards books and readiness to learn. To learn more, pick up your Every Child Ready to Read Parent Guide, call into your local branch or visit our website for some tips and explanations of the six reading skills that should be developed to aid a child's literacy journey, www.opl.on.ca and go to `Kids' on the Navigation bar and then `Early Years'. -- Submitted by the Oakville Public Library $ 17,900 SPECIAL EVENTS FOR THE NIGHT: Æ10-minute Astrology Reading ÆHand Reading& Massage ÆAromatherapy & Ambient Music ÆOn-Site Teeth Whitening ÆJewelry, Purse & Clothing Displays ÆBook signing w/ Alicia Snell 5pm - 6pm ÆRefreshments will be served Giveaways, Door prizes and more...
