For the past three years Jones has concentrated his efforts on improving his swimming. He didn't compete in swimming when he was growing up so he's been playing catch up since he began competing in triathlon. His efforts have paid off, though. At the world championships, he came out of the water just 10 seconds behind the leader. "It's been a long process and each year I've gotten better and better," he said. "I've noticed a big difference and I'm more confident starting the race. There's less bodies to get through so I don't waste as much energy in the first five minutes of the bike trying to catch up." Just three weeks earlier, Jones used one of his best-ever swims to set himself up well at the national championships in Kelowna, B.C. But in the end it was his running ability that led him to a second-place finish, finishing behind only two-time Olympic medalist Simon Whitfield. It would be another Canadian Olympian, Paul Tichelaar, who would prove to be Jones' biggest rival in the race. With Whitfield pulling away from the pack early in the run, Jones, Tichelaar and Brent McMahon battled for second, each pulling ahead at times. Tichelaar pulled ahead of McMahon in the final kilometer and Jones followed. With 200 metres remaining, Jones made his move and opened up a small gap. Sprinting all out for the last 100 metres, the two crossed the line side by side. "I thought I had won (second) and it took about 10 seconds for them to confirm it," said Jones, whose previous best at nationals was a fourth-place finish. "It was pretty cool. I had never been involved in something like that." With the season now over, Jones is looking forward to next year. He already has five top-10 World Cup finishes to his credit over the past four years and wants to make those a more regular occurrence. "I just want to be more consistent," he said. "I'm looking to be in the top 10, being competitive and being in that elite group as long as possible and having a shot at the podium." 2009-2010 WINTER BASKETBALL LEAGUE The Oakville Basketball Club is the premier basketball club in our community.
