OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, September 16, 2009 · 22 Youth concert, The Kings online, jazz auditions and divine voices The Oakville Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Roberto De Clara, will present a concert for young people lasting approximately 50 minutes on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 3 p.m. at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, 130 Navy Street. The performance will feature members of the Oakville School of Dance, under the direction of Amanda Anderson, and will be narrated by Ann Mulvale. A wide variety of music will be interpreted by the full orchestra, as well as by some of its talented younger members, and the aim will be to demonstrate how music and dance have been closely linked throughout history. Children will be randomly selected from the audience to sit with musicians during portions of the performance, and one lucky child will have an opportunity to conduct. The winners of this year's poster contest will be presented with their prizes. The overall winner will receive the main prize, a violin donated by Klaudia's Music Studio, for the third consecutive year. Arts Briefs St. Jude's concerts A diverse season of concerts has been announced by St. Jude's Celebration of the Arts. For its nineteenth season of concerts, the series is under new management following the retirement of founding chair and artistic director Don Pangman, who has moved on to new projects. The new chair is Ross Connell, who has been active at St. Jude's for many years, and the new artistic director is Doug Field, who retired as general manager of Intrada Brass of Oakville at the end of last year. The 2009-10 season will have three concerts, beginning on Saturday, Sept. 26, with Divine Voices featuring the sensational twelve-member Vancouver vocal ensemble, musica intima, which last appeared at St. Jude's in April 2006 when it performed to a sold-out audience. In February 2010, The Two of Us will present the Toronto jazz duo of pianist Joe Sealy and bassist Paul Novotny which, earlier this summer, played to a crowd of 20,000 at Le Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. The final concert of the season in April 2010 will present John Rutter's Gloria, performed by St. Jude's Choir, organist Andrei Streliaev, the orchestra of St. Jude's and conductor Thomas Bell. High Rendition jazz auditions The High Rendition Jazz Band is comprised of 20 high-performance musicians between the ages of 14-19, all from within Oakville, Burlington and the surrounding Halton Region.
