Aziz carries the flag Two Halton athletes, including Oakville rower Dan Aziz, were honoured by Team Ontario with special duties in last weekend's Canada Summer Games opening ceremonies. Aziz was chosen to carry the Ontario flag in the ceremonies, while Burlington basketball player Xandra Yantzi carried the Ontario sign. The 20-year-old Aziz has enjoyed immediate success in rowing after picking up the sport only four years ago. He was named the top junior rower at the Don Rowing Club two years ago and helped the Brown University varsity team win the Ivy League championship this season. Once a high-caliber hockey player, Aziz broke his neck in 2002 in a wakeboard accident and suffered a complete fracture of the second cervical vertebrae. The injury ended his hockey career and turned him to rowing, where he made the Canadian under-19 national team after only eight months in the sport. In 2006, he represented Canada at the CanAmMex Games in Mexico City, stroking the double and the quad to a silver and bronze medal. Upon graduation from Brown, Aziz plans to attend graduate school at Oxford University and row for the Oxford crew. He also hopes to eventually represent Canada at the Olympic Summer Games. Yantzi, 17, is shooting for her fourth straight national championship at the Canada Summer Games. She plays for the National Elite Development Academy, a program that brings together the top high school players in the country. GRIFFINS GREAT: The Oakville Griffins under12 girls' B soccer team went undefeated at last weekend's Brantford Classic tournament, winning the championship. U12 Griffins go undefeated in Brantford The Oakville Griffins under-12 girls' B soccer team managed to shake off a heartbreaking South Region Soccer League League Cup playoff loss to win the championship at the Brantford Classic last weekend. Oakville, which fell in penalty kicks to the Burlington Cobras in the League Cup semifinals Saturday, went undefeated in its six games at the Brantford tournament. Nikolina Rajcevic scored the game-winning goal in the championship game, en route to winning the MVP award. Emmie Yurchuk added an insurance marker in a 20 win over Grimsby.
