15 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, August 13, 2009 The 6th Annual TigerTel Oakville Charity Dragon Boat Festival 2009 Sunday August 16, 2009 Good fun for a good cause The exciting Sixth Annual TigerTel Oakville Charity Dragon Boat Festival presented by the Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar, takes place Sunday, August 16, 2009, at Kelso Conservation Park. It's an action-packed day with 75 teams competing -- both local and out-of-town. Along with the spirited competitions, the festival is one big party, offering lots of choices to have fun outdoors, with a wide selection of food and beverages, a beer tent for thirsty paddlers and their supporters, prizes, and live musical entertainment. Last year, about 2,500 participated in or attended the charitable event, which is an annual fundraiser for various charitable organizations. This year's Festival sponsors include three local businesses. The Title Sponsor is Tiger Tel, which provides award-winning, outsourced call centre and contact management services across North America. It is joined by two Major Sponsors, The Cooperators, which provides financial security for Canadians, and The Sign Department, which creates customized signage for any message. Proceeds from this year's event will be donated to the Halton Children's Aid Society, each participant's charity of choice, as well as other charities supported by the Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar. Rotary is respected globally for its charity work, especially with children. From vaccinating the world's children against polio to providing communities with clean water, Rotary sends volunteers into every corner of the world. Local Rotary clubs also support the needy right in our own community through a wide range of projects, such as running an annual Strawberry Social for elderly shut-ins to helping fund a bus for Halton's Alzheimer Day program operated by Acclaim Health, and much, much more. Last year's Festival raised an impressive $60,000 for charity. That's a lot of paddle power! This year's target is even higher. Gwen Angell-Mighton of the Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar, chair of the 2009 Festival organizing committee, says her club is extremely proud of the benefit resulting in the community directly from the funds raised. "It's also a hugely fun event, so it's win-win for everyone involved," she says. So put together some friends and colleagues, and come out and join the fun and help meet our target!
