OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, August 7, 2009 · 36 In the Garden at Bronte Plants and flowers abound inside and out at the Sovereign House. Horticulture, history and art are all in the mix in a multifaceted exhibit called In the Garden, which runs from Aug. 1 to 12 on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. Besides the pictures and stories in the heritage display rooms, there are botanical books and pamphlets from earlier times. Volunteers will be happy to discuss the exhibits and the house, The Art on the Bluffs series features a show of original art in the north wing of the house. All the pieces are florals or garden related. They include works by Lois Crawford, Lesha Kokosky, Frances Tyrell and other local artists. When the house was renovated, Royal Botanical Gardens' staff advised on the plant selections. The plants mainly reflect what would have been common at the end of the 19th century. The Bronte Horticultural Society adopted the garden as a project and have tended it for thirteen years. On Sunday, Aug. 9, Society members will lead tours through the garden to talk about the plants. Lemonade will be served on the patio. (Everything moves indoors in case of rain.) Admission is by donation. Sovereign House is at 7 West River St. overlooking the lake. There is parking at the crest of the hill on the left. For more information, call 905-825-5552.
