Residents stage rally as McGuinty visits 5 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, August 6, 2009 Continued from page 1 Your Smokestack.' "We want to demonstrate today that the people and the citizens are really concerned," said Doug MacKenzie, leader of the Chartwell-Maple Grove Residents' Association. "There's a number of things that have transpired, the demand (for electricity) is not there and therefore we're going to be wasting billions on these plants so...pause. Let's take a breather and clean the air a bit." TransCanada has countered this argument, stating the power plant is necessary to meet a growing Halton Region's energy demands in the future. Another protester commented on, what he saw, as the irony of McGuinty investing in a company that makes batteries for electric cars while at the same time pushing forward a power plant, which the protestors feels will undo any environmental gains electric cars might make. Mississauga Ward 2 Councillor Patricia Mullin was also present for the demonstration, standing with the protestors in their cause. Mullin noted the Clarkson Airshed Study, conducted by the Ministry of the Environment in "In an ideal world, I wouldn't build a gasfired plant anywhere in the province, but I don't live in that world. I live in this one and these decisions are always difficult." Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty 2007, showed the area to be overtaxed by pollutants. She also pointed out that in light of these findings the Clarkson Airshed Advisory Committee, of which Mullin was a member, put forward a resolution stating that a power plant should not be built in the area. "We have resolutions from both the city and the Region of Peel supporting our position and if we have to take court action we probably will," said the Mississauga councillor. "My position has been that this is irresponsible and almost immoral given this is their (the province's) study and not ours." With the Aug. 31 deadline for the OPA to award a contract approaching, Oakville and Mississauga have seen a flurry of antipower plant activities with well-attended rallies taking place in both municipalities. Both Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion and Oakville Mayor Rob Burton have added their voices to this discontent publicly stating their opposition to the power plant. Following the Electrovaya announcement, McGuinty noted that while the protests were `understandable,' what is at stake stretches beyond Oakville and Mississauga. "I've got a different responsibility. My constituency is Ontario, 13 million strong, and my responsibility is to make sure they have an adequate, affordable and reliable supply of electricity," he said. "In an ideal world I wouldn't build a gas-fired plant anywhere in the province, but I don't live in that world. I live in this one and these decisions are always difficult." With his speech complete, McGuinty boarded a grey hybrid SUV and departed as protestors continued to yell and wave their signs at his vehicle. McCallion and Mississauga South MPP Charles Sousa, who had attended the announcement, stepped outside when it was over and congratulated the protestors for their work, shaking hands with many of them. "He definitely knew you were out here," said Sousa. JON CURRIE / OAKVILLE BEAVER GONE: The hybrid SUV believed to be carrying Premier Dalton McGuinty drives past protesters.
