On June 13, 1959, the opening of Lions Pool made a big splash when it got coverage in a Toronto daily newspaper. Fifty years later, the Town of Oakville is inviting residents to come to its anniversary pool party. It will take place on Monday, Aug. 3 from 12:30-4:30 p.m. The pool party will include an official ribbon-cutting, cake, a barbecue and entertainment for the kids, as well as demonstrations by the Oakville Fire Department. Admission to the pool will cost 50 cents. "The Lions Pool has been a centre for community aquatic activities and water safety education for half a century, and continues to provide swimming and lifesaving programs to the community," said Mary Ellen Maxwell, manager of Aquatics Services for the Town of Oakville. In honour of the pool's anniversary, the Town of Oakville is holding a town-wide Lions Pool 50th Anniversary Lap Challenge throughout the summer. It challenges participants to swim 50 continuous laps at participating town pools to raise awareness and funds for the Lifesaving Society's Water Smart® drowning prevention campaign. Aquatic Services will also hold Water Smart Wednesdays and Foolish Fridays at the Town's outdoor pool public swims for the rest of the summer, with games, prizes and trivia to educate residents about water safety. In 1959 the Oakville Lions Club donated $47,000 towards the construction of the pool and a community centre, which cost $82,000 in total. In its first year, the Lions Pool enrolled 1,450 children in swimming or water safety lessons, beginning a long tradition of aquatic education.
