The `60s-themed cruise will be in support of the clean air program, featuring everyone's favourite `60s pop songs, along with dinner and a silent auction. The Shagadelics lead singer, Bob Shea (Awesome Powers), an Oakville resident of 12 years and father of Matthew, 19, and Victoria, 18, is an avid supporter of the Lung Association, understanding first hand how precious every breath is after suffering a near-fatal asthma attack five years ago. "I wanted to participate because I'm an asthma sufferer myself. I almost died five years ago from an asthma attack. It was bad. They didn't think I would make it," said Shea. "The lung association helped me get on track after my incident. I have not had an asthma attack in almost five years now. My breathing and health are excellent. I think it's important to spread the message because, had I really known how important it is to treat your asthma properly, I might have avoided what I went through." Shea also shared the origin of how this particular alter-ego and band came to be. "I started doing the Awesome Powers thing as a Halloween costume about 11 years ago. It slowly morphed into the Shagadellics. We have played casinos and festivals all over Canada and it's been a lot of fun. I also do other characters, including Bogey, Ricky Ricardo and Maxwell Smart. I always like to support the lung association as well as other charities whenever I can, and this is certainly a fun way to do it." Shea is the president/owner of Oakville's Digital Edge, along with being a part-time performer. The Lung Association is one of Canada's longest serving not-for-profit health-promotion organizations, concerned with the prevention and control of asthma, chronic lung disease caused by smoking and with air quality and its effect on lung health. "We all need to breathe healthy air," says Shea. "This event is meant to put the 'fun' in fundraising while driving home the message that we all need to keep air quality issues top-of-mind, especially as smog season approaches. A lot of people with asthma and other breathing problems fight for every breath on heavy smog days."
