OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, May 15, 2009 · 4 Seven new cases of H1N1 flu SATURDAY & SUNDAY ONLY! The Halton Region Health Department has received laboratory confirmation of seven new cases of novel H1N1 influenza virus in Halton Region, bringing the total number to 18. Five of the newly identified cases are students. All of the new cases did not require hospitalization. "Community spread continues to occur," said Dr. Bob Nosal, Halton Region's Medical Officer of Health. "The vast majority of cases are in the school-aged population, with four of the five schools reporting positive results being in Oakville. It should be noted that many of the students who are confirmed positive have already fully recovered and are back at school. "I also want to emphasize that students -- and adults -- who are ill with fever and cough must stay at home and not attend school or work," added Dr. Nosal. People should wash their hands frequently and regularly with soap and water, and to cover their coughs and sneezes with a tissue or their sleeve. The Health Department continues to work closely with the health care community and school boards on this issue.
