Unofficially, Robertson could have earned both. The 25-year-old pitcher's contribution to Oakville's 4-1 victory over the Erindale Cardinals Monday at Oakville Park didn't end after he tossed six shutout innings. In the seventh, A's right fielder Mark Tourangeau fielded a base hit and fired a two-hopper home where catcher Mark Griffin blocked the plate and tagged out the Cardinals' Steve Gallant. "That was the turning point," said A's comanager Rob Fisher of the play that helped Oakville escape the inning with a 2-1 lead. It was also part of an impressive debut for Tourangeau. A former high school teammate of Robertson's at Q.E. Park, the two kept in touch and met up again as opponents in the Intercounty Baseball League in 2007. Robertson returned to the A's last season and, when his old teammate finished up his colle- giate career at Buffalo University, he convinced Tourangeau to come join the team. "I told him this is a great league and that he'd probably have a lot more fun (than playing Intercounty)," Robertson said. Despite having played at higher levels, Tourangeau couldn't help but have openingnight jitters. "You better believe it," he said. "I had to take about 10 deep breaths before I went to the plate. I haven't seen a live pitcher in about seven years." Tourangeau didn't show signs of rust. He went 1-for-3 (collecting one of just four hits on the night for the A's), walked and scored twice, including the winner in a two-run second inning. Tourangeau hadn't batted in so long because, up until now, he had been a pitcher. Drafted by the Seattle Mariners in 2003, he opted to go to college instead. Tommy John surgery will limit his ability to help the A's on the mound, though co-manager Dave Smallhorn said he may be able to come in as a one- or two-inning reliever.
