Geo-engineering refers to large-scale, intentional manipulations of the earth's land, sea and atmosphere to combat the effects of climate change. Interestingly, Schutte has no formal post-secondary science education. Her area of expertise is actually the creative arts, with college diplomas in film production and television broadcasting. The mother of an 11-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son gained her scientific knowledge while working on a novel for young adults. The fictional book, which has the working title of Manifest Destiny, has been a project of hers for the past five years. Schutte said she has spent a significant amount of time on the Internet researching scientific issues, particularly those that affect the health of our planet, for the book. "It is an action adventure on how to save the world," she said. "It is about things kids can do to save the planet because they are the answer." Schutte is close to completing the book, which she plans to follow up with a screenplay. Environmental issues are a top priority for the local woman. While the Pie-in-the-Sky Contest might sound ridiculous, Schutte said its overall intent to raise awareness of helping save the planet is anything but humorous. This is a message that she is working to instill in her children. "Our family is very aware of so many things, with regards to the earth and our bodies," she said. "We talk about why we need to buy local produce, why we need to recycle, and even more important than recycling, why we need to reduce, reduce, reduce." Schutte will receive a T-shirt with a poster screened on it illustrating her winning geo-engineering scheme as the winner of the Pie-in-the-Sky Contest. The poster will also be advertised on ETC Group's website. The poster provides two `scientific' ways to accomplish Schutte's idea. One is by using 240 space shuttles tugging on the planet with highstrength cables. It would take about 28 months to realign the planet's orbit, the poster reads, adding that it would be "Easy as pie". Alternatively, 15 thermo-nuclear blasts set off at noon in the Pacific Ocean might just do the trick. "Goodbye Venus, Hello Mars!"
