Car thieves thwarted Two men have been taken into police custody after numerous vehicles in the Pine Glen Road area were broken into early Friday morning. Police said, shortly after 4:30 a.m. an Oakville resident observed a man breaking into a car on Pine Glen Road and gave chase. The Oakville resident eventually caught up to the man at which point the man pulled out a large screwdriver and threatened the Oakville resident before making his escape. Moments later, Halton police converged on the area and quickly arrested a suspect who was found hiding in a nearby yard. A second suspect was also located near the scene along with a considerable amount of allegedly stolen property. Alvaro Yepz, 21, of Toronto, has been charged with assault with a weapon, possession of break-in tools, theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000. Derek Taylor, 21, of Aurora, has been charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000. Police said, a large quantity of the recovered property still has yet to be claimed. They are asking residents in the area of Pine Glen Road and Creekmount Drive, who had property taken from their vehicle during the morning of April 10 to call Halton police at 905-878- 5511 ext 2215. Police investigating head-on collision The Halton police Collision Reconstruction Unit is trying to piece together the reason behind a head-on collision that took place in the area of Burnhamthorpe Road and 9th Line on Saturday. Police said the collision occurred around 3:30 p.m. when a black 2008 Mazda, traveling southbound on Ninth Line, crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a northbound black 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche. Personnel from the Oakville Fire Department extracted the driver of the Mazda, Samer Kurdi, 21. Kurdi was transported by air ambulance to Hamilton General Hospital with lifethreatening injuries. Police said Kurdi is listed in serious by stable condition. Three people in the Chevrolet were transported to Credit Valley Hospital by ambulance. they were all later released. Police do not know if alcohol, speed or cell phone use were factors in the crash. Airbags in the vehicles deployed and all involved in the crash were wearing their seatbelts. The section of road the crash occurred on was closed for around four hours. The collision is being investigated by Detective Constable Andy Dennis of the Collision Reconstruction Unit.
