Since opening in 2007, the centre has served more than 200 families in the GTA. There are so few services available for children on the autism spectrum, and the programs at Kids CAN focus on teaching fundamental social skills that so many of these children struggle with. Although there is an obvious and growing need for these programs, the centre has been unsuccessful at attaining any government funding and support and therefore relies on tuition fees paid by parents and fundraisers to subsidize program costs. On April 27, the centre will hold a large fundraising event called Keeping the Doors Open for Our Kids at Otellos Banquet and Conference Centre. The goal is to raise enough money to keep the services available for families. Tickets cost $50 and include dinner, dancing, live band, silent auction and raffle prizes.
