5 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, April 8, 2009 Great grandmother dies from injuries An 86-year-old great grandmother died Monday more than a week after she was seriously injured while a passenger in a wheelchair accessible taxi on the way to her birthday party at a local restaurant. Halton Regional Police report the wheelchair-bound woman was in a specialized wheelchair accessible taxicab on Dundas Street around 5:30 p.m. on March 29. She was accompanied by a family member inside the converted mini van for the ride. As the cab approached Sixth Line, a car traveling westbound on Dundas Street allegedly made a left turn in front of the taxi causing the cab driver to brake suddenly to avoid a collision. This dislodged the woman from her wheelchair and she slid forward into the backside of a folded benchseat, said the police. There was no contact between the two vehicles and the other car continued south on Sixth Line. The elderly woman suffered lifethreatening injuries and was taken to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital where she remained until succumbing to her injuries on Monday. As part of the investigation, the Halton Regional Police Collision Reconstruction Unit has conducted dynamic testing of the vehicle and restraint system. Police report the taxi company and driver are cooperating with the investigation. Investigators want to speak to the driver of the other car, identified as either a black Chrysler 300 or black Dodge Charger. Any witnesses who may have seen the accessible taxicab stopped in the intersection are asked to call the Reconstruction team at ext. 2350. Police are not releasing the name of the deceased or the cab company.
