OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, April 1, 2009 · 4 TransCanada unveiling gas-powered generator plans April 14 Oakville residents are being invited to attend an open house, on Tuesday, April 14, to hear details about a 900-megawatt natural gas-fueled electricity generation facility that may be coming to town. The event is being hosted by TransCanada, one of four companies involved in a competitive bid to carry out the project. The other companies engaged in this struggle include Invenergy Canada Development Partnership, Northland Power Inc. and Sithe Global Power Southdown ULC. To date, no bid has been accepted by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA), however, TransCanada is eager to share its vision. If successful, the Oakville Generating Station (OGS) will be located on industrial land on the south side of Royal Windsor Drive just east of the South Service Road in Oakville. Once established, the OGS is expected provide enough power to meet the energy needs of 360,000 homes throughout the southwestern GTA. The construction of the OGS would also benefit the community, said TransCanada's Senior Communications Specialist Kiersten Tucker, with the OGS paying municipal taxes annually and contributing to community programs. Tucker said the facility's establishment in Oakville would also create up to 600 jobs during construction and 25 full-time management, operations and maintenance jobs, once operational. TransCanada will be conducting environmental studies associated with the proposed OGS in the coming weeks. Those interested in hearing more about these studies or the proposed OGS will have the opportunity to talk with project team members and environmental consultants at the open house. The open house will take place from 4-8 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, located at 590 Argus Rd. The OPA is scheduled to award the contract for the building of the facility in July 2009 with the project expected to be complete by December 2013. Other sites being considered for the project by the other companies include southern Mississauga and southern Etobicoke. Further details on TransCanada's vision for the OGS can be found at www.transcanada.com/oakville. Mayor opposes proposal Continued from page 1 Mayor Rob Burton said he plans to vote against the proposal at council, as he said the Region faces a shortfall of $3 million by not indexing the development charges. "All it's going to do is shift $3 million of developers' costs to the taxpayer," Burton said. Halton Hills Councillor Jane Fogal, who put forward the motion to postpone increases, said Burton is incorrect. Any shortfall in capital projects that devel- opers must pay for will be covered under future development charges. There is no impact on existing taxpayers, she said. Regional Chair Gary Carr agreed with Fogal's assessment, noting this is a situation where developers are being given a break now and any shortfall in the regional budget will be paid back by future developers. Despite this, he voted against Fogal's proposal as he felt any adjustment to development charges should be done as part of a wider review.
