You may notice your dog lurking under the table at mealtime or a piece of broccoli tucked neatly under the plate or in a napkin. In general, toddlers and preschoolers have small appetites and their own food preferences, and some kids may not get key nutrients they require. For example, less than three percent of children aged four to eight meet their recommended fibre intakes. Parents can take steps to encourage healthy eating habits at an early age. We all want our kids to make healthy food choices, and a key to success is to get them to really enjoy and appreciate nutritious foods. So the question remains: is it possible to make healthy, happy eaters out of your kids? It certainly is with a little creativity of your own. Make food fun and exciting by providing them with healthy takes on everyday foods. The following are 10 simple and easy tips to help incorporate fun and fibre into your child's diet: 1. High-fibre cereals are great as part of a nutritious breakfast or as a snack later in the day. 2. Boost the fibre content in casseroles by tossing in a handful of wheat bran or a high-fibre cereal. They won't taste the difference but their bodies will certainly thank them for it. 3. Cookies and muffins hide fibre like a charm. Try purchasing low-fat cookies with fibre such as fig bars. 4. Avoid peeling fruit and vegetables; much of the fibre is found in the skin. Try making sweet potato fries with the skin on, or cut up some pears and apples (with the skin on) and sprinkle with cinnamon. 5. Fresh-fruit smoothies are always a hit with kids. Add flaxseed to give it a fibre boost. 6. Choose whole-grain pastas and serve with tomato vegetable sauce. 7. Try to incorporate more beans into their diets. For example, make a quesadilla with black beans or bake rolled, mashed and spiced-up chickpeas into balls for a healthy falafel. 8. Use whole-wheat flour instead of white flour when making pancakes, cookies, or muffins. 9. Choose 100 per cent whole wheat or whole grain bread or rolls. 10. Make vegetable and bean based soups. Try adding bulgur or barley instead of white rice. When increasing the amount of fibre in a child's diet, add it slowly to avoid potential side effects such as bloating or flatulence that may occur when the body is growing accustomed to the new amount. To help avoid these symptoms, encourage children to drink plenty of water and other fluids and to be active.
